At least Iran makes the trains run on time
From Fars:
Iran’s Road and Transportation Minister Hamid Behbahani announced that experts are working on a plan to link Iran’s national railway to Lebanon through Iraq and Syria. The plan will help the Mediterranean Sea’s railways connect China through Iran, Behbahani said.
Aside from the interesting question of “Hmm, just what might Iran want to move by rail to Lebanon?”, Iran has been working to build up its rail network to neighboring countries to boost trade.
For instance, in April of last year, Iran and Armenia agreed to begin work on a project linking the two countries by rail. (They share a short land border between Turkey and Azerbaijan.) Funding is still an issue. In June, RFERL said loans might be sought from China to help finance the work.
In 2008, talk began to surface that Russia may assist in the building of this link to Armenia. This was of interest to me because starting in June 2008, through a 30 year concession, Russia took over the management of Armenia’s rail system through South Caucasus Railways, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Russian Railways. SCR has a link to Georgia, and with Russia’s invasion of Georgia in 2008, I’ve wondered if someone had a long-term eye on a possible rail link from Russia to Iran, via which, say, arms could be moved.
